Abstract: Ontologies and the Semantic Web

Ontologies and the Semantic Web are becoming increasingly important when planning for and building intelligent applications. This set of talks provides an introduction to the area. The first tutorial provides a high level overview covering what ontologies are and how and where they can be applied to solve problems today. It is expected to be broadly accessible. The second tutorial provides a more in depth introduction and introduces more details about how to build ontologies, features of ontology languages, and tools that can support ontology-based applications.

Deborah L. McGuinness. ``Ontologies and the Semantic Web''. Presented August 9, 2004 at the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency. The overview presentation is available in powerpoint. The second expanded introduction presentation is available in powerpoint.
