Abstract: We report on the methods used to conceptualize the domain of clinical trials, and on the reuse of concepts from another ontology. The goals of our clinical trials ontology are to (1) have a standardized representation for reporting trials of any experimental design, and (2) facilitate the use of trials data for multiple knowledge-based activities. To conceptualize the domain, we identified a target user group, meta-analysts, and explored their conceptualization of clnical trials. This informal conceptualization was then compared to the ontology from the T-Helper system, and the classes related to the modeling of protocols were reused. We also comment on efforts to collaborate with the user community in standardizing the ontology.
