Abstract: This paper describes Cage, a concurrent problem solving system which attempts to deploy parallelism within the traditional blackboard model. With Cage, the user can specify in detail which parts of his blackboard application to execute in parallel. It was hoped that by imbedding parallelism at different levels of the blackboard model a multiplicative speed-up could be achieved. The Cage system, its architecture, and its operation in a multi-processing environment are discussed. A number of experiments which were conducted to evaluate the speed-up and through-put achievable by Cage for one particular application are also presented.
